But Pindi has a lot more to tell than just it’s military tales. The city is known for its heritage and culture. Its multi-religious character changed when almost all of its Hindu and Sikh inhabitants left for India. Sixty five years after partition, I went looking for their temples and Gurudwaras. Chiniot: Hindu Mandir The derserted mandir stands obscure amongst clusters of houses and flows of people who do not come inside to worship the gods that it is devoted to. Nobodys knows much about it. The only information I read online indicates that it may be built at the order of Maharaja Gulab Singh, a powerful Keshmiri king who expanded his rule into Chiniot after the 2nd Anglo-Sikh War. It now houses a school. My heartful and sincere thanks goes to Maan Usman an excellent photographer, without whom my Chiniot visit would have been aborted, and Bhai Riaz, security guard of Government Institute of Commerce, Chiniot, a friend of Maan Usman, who kindly led us to all these wonderful places in a strange city Chiniot. So far as I know, Lahoris are good at eating and enjoying life. So here's my suggestion to all Lahoris: Go visit Chiniot; It's a wonderful place much worthy of a one-day trip! Sadhu Bella Mandir Eshwar Lal said that Baba Bankhandi Maharaj had come to this place in 1823, either from Kero Khetar near Delhi or Nepal, and had chosen Menak Parbat (the island where the temple stands) as his abode. The eighth Gaddi Nasheen of Baba Bankhandi Maharaj, Sant Harnam Das, started construction of this temple in 1889, when Baba Bankhandi died. According to Eshwar Lal, the temple is spread over nine acres and comprises a main place of worship (Asthan of Baba Bankhandi Maharaj), abodes for his ‘shish’ (students), a library which houses books on religion and Hindu mythology, separate ‘Bhandars’ (dining rooms) for women and men, separate places of worship for men and women, washrooms and a huge garden. Although the temple had withstood the floods of 1976, this year’s flood had wreaked havoc in the temple. The Temple was abandoned & illegally occupied by land grabbers after the 1947 partition. In 2007, Pakistan Hindu Council brought back the sanctity of the Temple by taking a bold step to renovate the same. The Station Commander, PNS Himalaya, Manora Cantt handed over the control of this Temple to Pakistan Hindu Council in June, 2007. Katas Raj Temple is situated in Chakwal district of Punjab in Pakistan. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple has existed before the days of Mahabharata and the Pandava brothers spent a substantial part of their exile here. It is said that the five Pandava brothers, heroes of the Historical epic Mahabharata, stayed here four out of the 14 years that they spent in exile. Its origin involves the death of Shiva's wife Satti. When she died, Shiva cried so much and for so long, that his tears created two holy ponds - one at Pushkar in Ajmer, India and the other at the Katas Raj Temple. Shri Hinglaj MandirAn important Shakti Peeth of Goddess Sati, Hinglaj Mandir or Nani Mandir is situated in Hingol National Park in Baluchistan province of Pakistan. It came into existence when Lord Vishnu cut up Sati's dead body into 52 pieces so that Lord Shiva would calm down and stop his Tandava. These pieces got scattered all over the Indian subcontinent whilst Sati's head fell at Hingula or Hinglaj. According to ancient scriptures, Lord Rama had also meditated at Hinglaj to atone for his sin of 'Brahmhatya' - killing of Ravana who was a Brahmin and a great devotee of Lord Shiva and Goddess Durga. Sharda Devi Temple Dedicated to Saraswati, the Goddess of learning, Sharda Devi Temple is located in Neelum valley just across the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK). In the past, it has been a site of a Buddhist University and Adi Shankara is also known to have visited the Temple during his travels across India. Bheeru is derived from the Sanskrit word of Bherv, which means Bogey-man. Bheeru is an incarnation of the Lord Shiv-Rudar, who is the Hindu deity of destruction. Shiv-Rudar travels on a dog, and the fear that he excites is such that even the witches and the ghosts are afraid of him. He is usually found near the cremating grounds. An old Hindu temple of historical significance situated in the east of Thokar Niaz Beg, called the Bhadhar Kali Mandar, is facing decay and destruction. The exact date of the construction of this mandar has not been deciphered but according to the founder of Punjabi research institute, Khojgarh, Mr Iqbal Kaisar it has to be around 2000 years old. The temple has one central building, with a huge pool in the center of the main complex. The walls of the mandar had beautiful frescoes, some of which have managed to survive over the years. The stone pool was fed by 12 wells through an indigenous drainage system. The Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Karachi (Devnagari: श्री स्वामीनारायण मन्दिर, कराची, Nastaliq: شری سوامی نارائن مندر، کراچی) is a Hindu temple that belongs to the NarNarayan Dev Gadi of the Swaminarayan Sampraday and is the only Swaminarayan temple in Pakistan.[1] The temple is notable for its size and frontage, over 32,306 square yards (27,012 m2) on the M. A. Jinnah Road in Karachi city.The temple celebrated its anniversary of 150 years in April 2004. It is believed that not only Hindus but also adherents of Islam visit the temple, which adds to its notability.[2] There is a sacred cowshed within the premises of this temple.[3] The temple is located at the centre of a Hindu enclave in a Muslim dominated city and country.The building that housed a dharmshala (Guest house) for visiting devotees has now been converted to the office of the City District Government. Ramapir Temple NOTE : Rama Pir Temple was made in 1800 A.D. Khatri Chanoo is said to have initiated the work of the temple. Rama Pir used to sit at the place where at present Mandir (temple) exists. One wish of the Katris was realized then they got this temple made as a token of thankfulness. As a matter of fact Rama, Pir is buried in Rajistan (India). Every year a fair is held at Tando Allahyar city and at the same time fair is held at Rajistan as well. It is said that around one (01) million people come to witness the proceedings of Rama Pir fair at Tando Allahyar city.
