You are finally entering college.
For many, that translates into getting rid of your school uniform and updating your wardrobe.

Wondering what to wear on your first day?

Well, there are lots of new looks you can experiment with. The idea is to create your own look by mixing and matching some key pieces.

We picked up some hot trends from the recently concluded fashion weeks in Delhi and Mumbai, as well as the international runways.

The white shirt

A white shirt is something that you just can't do without. Here are three ways to wear it:

*Classic semi formal, three-fourth sleeves, front buttons
*Pretty and romantic with chikan work
*Casual and summery, with white on white block printing
You can team your white shirt with your favourite pair of denims or printed knee-length/ ankle-length skirts.

Sailor girl

Striped tees are having their day in the sun. Apart from the standard polo neck tee shirt with a white collar, try:

*Going nautical with white and navy blue and a boat neck. Add a touch of red by wearing a scarf or using red accessories like a big red bag or earrings.
*Brighten up your look with light and dark stripes of the same colour.
Do-it-yourself tip: Tie a red ribbon around your neck or pin it to your tee shirt, and let it flutter.

Prints, skirts, denim
Prints are hot!
They could be floral or graphic. Wear either a printed top or skirt.

Floral prints can be updated with some subtle embroidery for a more modern look. If you don't care for printed shirts/ skirts, you can still work it into your look by wearing a printed scarf.

Do-it-yourself tip: Get inventive. Look around the house for anything that can be used as a block for printing like, for instance, a coaster or a pair of scissor or even a vegetable like a potato.

Dip the shape in the fabric paint and make an impression on a plain coloured tee shirt, scarf or skirt. Voila, you have a unique print that shows off your personal style!

Skirts sizzle

Skirts made their presence felt all over the ramp in the recent fashion weeks. Clearly, they are here to stay.

*Twirly, flirty, flared knee-length skirts are in.
*Go sexy in a denim mini in pastel shades like baby pink, baby blue or mint.

Jeans: High-waist is in, low-rise is out.

High-waist jeans are making a slow but steady comeback. Wear them with a big belt -- in leather, metal, plastic and/ or fabric, etc -- to emphasise your natural waist.

Do-it-yourself tip: Dig around your mom's closet for a retro belt. Big belts -- in the style that was popular between the sixties and the eighties -- are also making a comeback.

Accessories: Be bold
Carry a BIG bag
The bigger, the better. Not only is this stylish, it is also very practical; what better way to carry all your files and books?

Get a stylish folder covered with a hip print to file all your papers. Prints can include black and white floral prints, geometric prints in a combination of pastel shades or paisley prints in red and ochre.

For college formals and other social events, don't forget to have a sleek glamorous clutch by your side.

Necklaces

These are the accessories of the moment. Wear a single strand of big beads. Or, to look funkier, a string of paper/ cloth flowers. Don't go overboard though.

When you opt for the necklace, minimise your other accessories for a no-fuss look.

Do-it-yourself tip:
String together your own beads to create a matching necklace for each outfit.

The Wedge

Fashion is cyclical; it's time to put away your stilettos. Besides, they aren't even practical for a day in college.

But if your height means a lot to you, wedges are a good bet.

If you're trying out heels for the first time, wedges are a very comfortable heel to wear.

Try an espadrille for the ultimate fresh look. It's a wedge heel that is covered with a straw braid.

Add some glam
Sunglasses get bigger
Been partying or studying all night? Don't waste money on under-eye creams.

Big sunglasses are here to stay.

They hide your tired eyes and also pump up your glamour quotient.

Go for pastel shaded frames (pink, blue, green). If you really want to pull off a high fashion look, go for white frames.

Add more layers

Layering is one of the key trends this season.

A great way to add fashion points to an otherwise ordinary outfit is to add a small jacket or shrug (a short jacket with just sleeves and the back) over your shoulders.

If you want a little bit more fashion chutzpah, try layering leggings under your skirt. These could be just calf-length.

You could wear two tee shirts. For instance, wear a spaghetti top with a racer-back tee shirt.

You could wrap a scarf or a half-stole around your hips, over a skirt or jeans.
